An interesting featured question asked what was the first human invention to break the sound barrier. I wonder if any animal beat us to it? I assume no plant did! But if you know of one, please name it. Some volcanic eruptions (e.g. kimberlite pipes) and meteors break the sound barrier. Kudzu and bamboo grow fast, but not that fast!

No animal can travel that fast naturally. Unless they were sitting on a volcano when it went off :)
Reply:While there are no animals that are capable of pushing their whole body faster than the speed of sound, birds like Whip-poor-wills will break the sound barrier with thier wingtips, creating a booming sound. Report It
Reply:A number of animals have broken the sound barrier in test aircraft, but not on their own power. Of course, man would be one of the animals that has done it in a powered machine.

Reply:I am sure some animals have been on a supersonic transport. AKA Concorde. That's surely broken the barrier. They say some military grunts are equivalent of chimps and wild animals. They too have broken the sound barrier on a fighter jet.
Reply:Yes insects can travel at a relative high speeds .. even some birds of prey too.. But they travel only small distances. In micro scopic level they do break sound barrier.
